I Ate: Pork Chop Buns @ Tai Lei Loi Kei

Three years ago I went to Macau and had these egg tarts. It was, to put it simply, a life changing experience. I also had these pork chop buns at the village of Taipa. Like the poor quality of the photo below (three years ago I did not know what camera focus is), my memory of the place is sketchy.

I no longer remember how the shop looked like or where it was. But what I do remember is the crispy bone-in pork chop sandwiched between two crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside buns. No dressing and not a single vegetable in sight. It was, also, a life changing experience.

Times like these, I miss Macau so.

When it was announced that this household name is opening a branch five minutes away from my place, I owed it to myself to give it a try.

A pork chop bun set at RM 13.80 comes with your choice of coffee/Macau milk tea or soft drink. You can opt for the normal plain bun or Polo bun. They also have chicken wings, curry fish balls, rice and noodles set.

So how did it taste? The bun is good. Crisp and sturdy to hold that mammoth piece of meat in the middle, it is soft and warm on the inside. I think they put a little butter/margarine on the inside like regular burger places. The pork chops are bone-in and refried to order. Despite that, it is still moist and juicy. The meat around that end part of the chop? Best.thing.to.gnaw.on.

Did it taste like Macau? To be honest, I felt that this is a tad bit over seasoned to my liking. The milk tea that comes with the set is also overly sweet. Even with adding water, it tasted like diabetes waiting to happen.

They also serve this dessert, Sawdust Cake/Pudding for RM5.50 each. Its famous in Macau also known as Serradura Pudding. It is basically layers of sweet whipped cream with crushed Marie biscuits to create a layered effect.

Tip One: Buy two pudding at once and it will only costs you RM 3.50 each. This is not written anywhere on the menu. Just helped you save money there, virtual friend. You're welcome.

Tip Two: Leave your dessert to soften for about 20 minutes. If not, trying to scoop it out with the pathetic plastic spoon they provide you with will make you want to flip a table.

Sure this is no Macau. But it will do for a quick, porky fix. Find the map and address below!
